Key Roles of Vitamins A, C, and E in Aflatoxin B1-Induced Oxidative Stress

Alpsoy, L. | Yalvac, M.E.

Book | 2011 | Vitamins and Hormones86 , pp.287 - 305

Aflatoxins (Aspergillus flavus toxins) are one of the natural toxic molecules which are produced by a group of fungi called Aspergillus. Foods and drinks contaminated with aflatoxins cause global health and environmental problems. Today in many developing countries, these toxins are leading cause of some liver cancers and serious gastrointestinal problems. Aflatoxins, which are well known to be mutagenic, carcinogenic, hepatotoxic, and immunosuppressive, exert inhibitory effects on biological processes including DNA synthesis, DNA-dependent RNA synthesis, DNA repair, and protein synthesis. Aflatoxins B1 (AFB1) is the most widespread . . . oxidative agent of the aflatoxins. Numerous diverse compounds and extracts have been reported to reduce the aflatoxins induced oxidative stress in the body. Most of these inhibitors including phenylpropanoids, terpenoids, alkaloids, and vitamins are originally derived from plants. Among these, being essential biomolecules, vitamins are used as coenzymes in very significant biological reactions. They also function as nonenzymatic antioxidative agents protecting the cells from oxidative stress-induced toxicity and transformation. This chapter reviews the mechanism of AFB1-induced oxidative stress and focuses on the protective effects of vitamins A, C, and E on reducing this stress. © 2011 Elsevier Inc Daha fazlası Daha az

Discourse, Identity and the Question of Turkish Accession to the EU: Through the Looking Glass provides an invaluable analysis of the issues of Turkish accession to the EU. The focus on elite discourse provides a new and engaging approach to this contentious topic and offers a unique understanding of the competing arguments within the EU regarding the question of Turkey's accession and the differing visions for the European Union that underlie them. Utilising the Habermasian Theory of Communicative Action Catherine MacMillan focuses on how political elites from the member states and EU institutions engage with the issue, analyses th . . .e different attitudes to the Turkish candidacy to the EU and explores the wider implications and competing visions of the EU the differences highlight. By closely examining the different ways that EU elites view and react to this issue vital lessons about the potential wider enlargement of the union to central and eastern Europe can be drawn. © Catherine MacMillan 2013. Energy policies of turkey during the erdogan era: Facts and lies

Varol, T.

Book | 2017 | Energy Policies of Turkey During the Erdogan Era: Facts and Lies , pp.1 - 264

Erdogan discovered in 2002 that energy policies and the energy sector would create a mechanism to institute his dynasty in Turkey. The energy policies of the Erdogan era include how the Erdogan family engaged in the international energy business in Turkey and neighboring countries, and how they became wealthy. After many years of supporting the Calik Holding, the former CEO, Berat Albayrak, Erdogan’s son-in-law, was appointed Turkey’s Minister of Energy by Erdogan in 2015. Since Erdogan came to power in 2002, many books and articles were published on Turkey’s foreign policy and domestic politics by scholars. However, this is the fir . . .st book that combines Erdogan’s energy policy actions (country by country in chronological order) as well as describing the underlying corruption allegations, the Zarrab case, and the smuggling of ISIS oil. As a result of the research through official Turkey institutions and international institutions, it is shown that an overseas Turkish energy company was and continues to be involved in the energy blocks of Iraqi Kurdistan, thanks to Erdogan’s agreement with the Barzani administration. This book aims to analyze Turkey’s energy relations with Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Iraq-Iraqi Kurdistan, Eastern Mediterranean and Central Asian countries since 2002. One of the notable outcomes of the book is to reveal how Erdogan contributed to Israel’s energy security despite his anti-Israeli rhetoric. The reader will learn the details of the energy projects between Turkey and other countries. In addition, the reader will also learn the roles of Turkey’s energy companies close to the Erdogan family. The book emphasizes the deterioration of Turkey-Russia relations and its impact on Turkey’s energy security, thanks to the Erdogan-Putin rivalry over Syria. Erdogan has been in power since 2002 (President since 2014), and is trying to convert Turkey’s political regime to remain in power for as long as possible. Appointing his son-in-law as Turkey’s Minister of Energy is not a coincidence, but rather a business strategy. (Imprint: Nova). © 2017 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc. Speaking the language of the night: Aspects of the gothic in selected contemporary novels

Raducanu, A.

Book | 2014 | Speaking the Language of the Night: Aspects of the Gothic in Selected Contemporary Novels , pp.1 - 206

This study contributes to the emerging field of Global Gothic. It focuses on the survival and evolution of Gothic subgenres and tropes in selected contemporary novels, produced in geographies and histories far away from its Western cradle. Some Gothic features identified as universal such as the relationship between space and character, the sublime, the process of Othering, uncanny doubles and the dissolution of identity are explored. This study maintains that the novels under scrutiny, written by a wide variety of authors such as Adiga, Desai, Ishiguro, Müller, Pamuk, Roberts and Rushdie, facilitate a fruitful dialogue between West . . . and East under the sign of Gothic. A diverse critical apparatus is employed, including texts from Bhabha, Kristeva, Deleuze and Guattari, Derrida, Mishra and others. © Peter Lang GmbH Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften. Ethnicity and elections in Turkey: Party politics and the mobilization of swing voters

Akdağ, G.A.

Book | 2014 | Ethnicity and Elections in Turkey: Party Politics and the Mobilization of Swing Voters , pp.1 - 266

Ethnicity and Elections in Turkey attempts to understand the mobilization strategies of incumbent parties to consolidate and increase their support among swing voters of an ethnic group. By analyzing the strategy of AKP on voters of Kurdish origin, it investigates the conditions under which it can mobilize them through the clientelistic network and its effectiveness in increasing support for the party. This investigation is conducted through a district and neighborhood level case study conducted in the districts of Beyoglu, Sancaktepe and Beykoz situated in Istanbul. The main hypotheses are tested through five different steps. First . . .ly, an examination of electoral results identifies a large number of voters of Kurdish origin as ideologically close to pro-Islamist and pro-Kurdish parties. Secondly, the book identifies the main organs responsible of mobilizing voters and defines the nature of the clientelistic network. Thirdly, the study suggests that the incorporation of these voters into the party's clientelistic network is a function of the number and time of entry of activists of Kurdish origin in the party's ranks and the intensity of their contacts with the voters. Fourthly, it reveals the effectiveness of clientelistic mobilization in consolidating and increasing support among swing voters of Kurdish origin. Lastly, the inner party organization and critical juncture experienced by the party are argued to be influential in its ability to increase its network through the incorporation of new activists. Providing an alternative explanation of AKP's electoral success in Turkey, this book is essential reading for students and scholars with an interest in Middle East politics, political parties and political science. © 2015 Gül Arikan Akdağ.
