Effects of Chlorine Stress on Pseudomonas aeruginosa Biofilm and Analysis of Related Gene Expressions

Chlorine is deployed worldwide to clean waters and prevent water-originated illnesses. However, chlorine has a limited disinfection capacity against biofilms. Microorganisms form biofilms to protect themselves from biological threats such as disinfectant chemicals. Pseudomonasaeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen and its biofilm form attaches to surfaces, living buried into exopolysaccharides, can be present in all watery environments including tap water and drinking water. This research aimed to study the biofilm trigger mechanism of the opportunistic pathogen P.aeruginosa PAO1 strain, which is known to form biofilm in water supp . . .ly systems and human body, under chlorine stress levels. In addition to biofilm staining, certain genes that are relevant to the stress condition were selected for gene expression analysis. The bacteria cultures were grown under chlorine stress with concentrations of 0.5, 0.7 and 1 mg/l. Six gene regions were determined related to biofilm and stress response: rpoS,bifA,migA,katB,soxR, and algC. Biofilm formation was analyzed by basic fuchsin staining, and gene expressions were quantified by quantitative real-time PCR. According to the results, highest biofilm production was observed in P.aeruginosa PAO1 wild strain under no stress conditions. A new decomposition approach for the home health care problem

Home Health Care (HHC) is a relatively new service that plays an important role to reduce hospitalization costs and improve the life quality for patients. Human resource planning is one of the most important processes in HHC systems, for which service providers have to deal with several operational problems, e.g., the assignment of operators to patients together with their routing process. In the literature, either these problems have been simultaneously solved, or decomposed by first solving the assignment problem and then the routing problem. In this work, we propose an alternative approach, where the decomposition is based on the . . . First Route and Second Assign (FRSA) approach. An instance generation mechanism is developed as well, which generates instances inspired from real HHC providers, to test the proposed FRSA approach under different circumstances. Construction of Home-Made Tin Fixed-Point Cell at TUBITAK UME

TUBITAK UME Temperature Laboratory initiated a new study which focuses on the construction of a tin freezing-point cell as a primary temperature standard. The design is an open-cell type similar to the National Institute of Standards and Technology design. With this aim, a brand new vacuum and filling line employing an oil diffusion pump and two cold traps (liquid nitrogen and dry ice) was set-up. The graphite parts (crucible, thermometer well, etc.) have been baked at high temperature under vacuum. Each cell was filled with approximately 1 kg of high-purity tin (99.9999 %) in a three-zone furnace. Then several melting and freezing . . .curves were obtained to assess the quality of the home-made cell, and also the new cell was compared with the existing reference cell of the laboratory. Magnesium Sulfate Reduced Opioid Consumption in Obese Patients Undergoing Sleeve Gastrectomy: a Prospective, Randomized Clinical Trial

Objective: The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of magnesium sulfate on pain management for pain after sleeve gastrectomy operation. Design: A prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical study. Setting: University hospital. Participants: Eighty patients undergoing sleeve gastrectomy. Measurements and Main Results: Visual analog scale for the evaluation of pain, sedation score, mean arterial pressure, heart rate, and total analgesic consumption was recorded. Serum magnesium levels were determined before the operation, at the end of the operation, and at 24 h. Cumulative morphine consumption and pain scores were found to be higher in the control group than the magnesium group. Based on the insights gleaned from decades of research, it seems clear that mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) is an essential signaling node that integrates environmental clues for regulation of cell survival, metabolism and proliferation of the cells. Exciton related optical absorption in a spherical quantum dot

An exciton in a spherical quantum dot is studied analytically within the effective mass approximation. A parabolic confinement under an electric field is considered. The linear and nonlinear optical absorption coefficients are calculated within the density matrix formalism. No assumptions are made about the strength of the confinement. A clinical and pathophysiological approach to traumatic brain injury-induced pituitary dysfunction

Purpose: This review aimed to evaluate the data underlying the pathophysiology of TBI-induced hypothalamo-pituitary dysfunction. Methods: Recent literature about the pathophysiology of TBI-induced hypothalamo-pituitary dysfunction reviewed. Results: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a worldwide epidemic that frequently leads to death; TBI survivors tend to sustain cognitive, behavioral, psychological, social, and physical disabilities in the long term. The most common causes of TBI include road accidents, falls, assaults, sports, work and war injuries. From an endocrinological perspective, TBIs are important, because they can cause pi . . .tuitary dysfunction. Although TBI-induced pituitary dysfunction was first reported a century ago, most of the studies that evaluate this disorder were published after 2000. TBI due to sports and blast injury-related pituitary dysfunction is generally underreported, due to limited recognition of the cases. Conclusion: The underlying pathophysiology responsible for post-TBI pituitary dysfunction is not clear. A decomposition approach for the home health care problem with time windows

Optimization tools are necessary to efficiently plan service delivery for patients at home in the context of Home Health Care services. In the scientific literature, Periodic Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows (PVRPTW) is proposed to address the assignment, scheduling and routing processes with time windows. However, PVRPTW is computationally difficult and not viable for large-size problems. Thus, a practical approach is proposed to decompose the problem. Evaluation of Sexual Dysfunction in Males with Diabetes

This study was conducted in order to determine the prevalence of sexual dysfunction and factors affecting sexual dysfunction (SD) in male patients with diabetes. Diabetes is a public health problem. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is seen in nearly half of all males who have had diabetes for more than 10 years. Erectile dysfunction, metabolic and psychological factors are involved in the emergence. A descriptive was conducted and questionnaire was used in this study. Data was gathered via general knowledge form which consists of socio-demographic characteristics and risk factors, International Index of Erectile Function, Quality of Life S . . .cale (SF-36), Beck Depression Inventory, Coopersmith Self-Esteem Scale, and Body Image Scale. SD was determined in 48 % of our cases. The most affected domain among the cases was erectile function (33.1 %) and intercourse satisfaction (29.1 %), and the least affected domain was sexual desire (6.3 %). Most of the male cases with ED had mild and moderate ED (42.6 %). Factors affecting SD’s included age, education level, obesity, hypertension, retinopathy, vasculopathy, nephropathy, diabetic foot, HBA1C and LDL levels, diabetes duration, drugs used. All quality of life subgroups scores were lower in male patients with SD than patients without SD except for pain. Depression and body image scores were lower in male patients with SD. SD’s are affected by both metabolic and psychosocial factors. In the past decade a number of different stem cell types have entered the clinical applications increasingly as a therapeutic option, due to their tissue maintenance capacity at the site where they localize. Although it was initially thought that conferral of resilience to damaged tissue largely depends on the stem cells themselves through orchestration of signaling among the local epithelial and immune systems at the injury site, recent findings point out that the remarkable regenerative capacity of stem cells is rather due to their nanovesicular products that emerge as the new active players of tissue repair processes. Among these . . . extracellular vesicles exosomes generated particularly by stem cells have been receiving a substantial interest both in the fields of stem cell biology and extracellular vesicles. In this chapter fundamental facts about stem cell biology, biogenesis of extracellular vesicles and exosomes, their structure, and function are summarized. Moreover, properties of both tumor-derived exosomes as well as those derived from stem cells are discussed relatively in-depth in terms of their influence on proximal and distal tissue physiology. Styles and style-stretching: How are they related to successful learning?

Although the learning style construct has aroused much interest over the years, questions remain regarding basic issues such as definition, the validity and/or reliability of various measurement instruments, and the relationship between learning style and successful learning. Furthermore, although maintaining stylistic flexibility is recommended by many authors, few studies have attempted to relate the style-stretching concept to successful learning. This study therefore attempted to address these questions. According to results, conducted among 106 Turkish university students, using an original instrument constructed using elements . . . from established questionnaires, a small group of styles was significantly correlated with exam results, accounting for about a quarter of the variance (considered a large effect size in social science). In addition, higher-scoring students reported a more eclectic range of styles, suggesting more willingness to style-stretch, while lower-scoring students reported a more limited range. A New Generation of Open Zinc Freezing Point Cells at TUBITAK UME

The Temperature Laboratory at TUBITAK UME initiated a study which focused on the construction of freezing point cells of ITS-90 as primary temperature standards. The first cell constructed within the scope of this study was an open tin freezing point cell and the results were in good agreement with the reference tin fixed point cell of UME. The second set of cells constructed was two open zinc freezing point cells. The design of these cells is similar to the tin freezing point cell.
