Productivity and technical change in Malaysian banking: 1989-1998

E. Dogan | D.K. Fausten

Article | 2003 | Asia-Pacific Financial Markets10 ( 02.03.2020 ) , pp.205 - 237

This study examines the impact of deregulation and technological change on the productivity of Malaysian banks over the period 1989-1998. Malmquist indices constructed with nonparametric DEA techniques are decomposed into their pure efficiency, scale efficiency, and technological change components. Our findings indicate an erosion of banking productivity that masks divergent tendencies among its component elements. These are dominated by adverse effects of technological change, which are associated with a reduction in the labor intensity of banking activity. Consistent with the mixed findings reported in the literature, the present . . .investigation suggests that regulatory reform and liberalization are not sufficient conditions for productivity improvement. © Springer 2005 Daha fazlası Daha az

Neuroendocrine changes after aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage

Karaca, Z. | Hacioglu, A. | Kelestimur, F.

Review | 2019 | Pituitary22 ( 3 ) , pp.305 - 321

Introduction: The prevalence of pituitary dysfunction is high following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) and when occurs it may contribute to residual symptoms of aSAH such as decreased cognition and quality of life. Hypopituitarism following aSAH may have non-specific, subtle symptoms and potentially serious consequences if remained undiagnosed. Methods: We reviewed the literature on epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnostic methods and management of neuroendocrine changes after aSAH as well as on the impact of pituitary dysfunction on outcome of the patient. Results: The prevalence rates of pituitary dysfunction after aSA . . .H varies greatly across studies due to different diagnostic methods, though growth hormone deficiency is generally the most frequently reported followed by adrenocorticotropic hormone, gonadotropin and thyroid stimulating hormone deficiencies. Pituitary deficiency tends to improve over time after aSAH but new onset deficiencies in chronic phase may also occur. There are no clinical parameters to predict the presence of hypopituitarism after aSAH. Age of the patient and surgical procedures are risk factors associated with development of hypopituitarism but the effect of pituitary dysfunction on outcome of the patient is not clear. Replacement of hypocortisolemia and hypothyroidism is essential but treatment of other hormonal insufficiencies should be individualized. Conclusions: Hypopituitarism following aSAH necessitates screening despite lack of gold standard evaluation tests and cut-off values in the follow up, because missed diagnosis may lead to untoward consequences. © 2019, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature Daha fazlası Daha az

Ultrasonic Investigation of the Effect of Carbon Content in Carbon Steels on Bulk Residual Stress

Uzun, F. | Bilge, A.N.

Article | 2015 | Journal of Nondestructive Evaluation34 ( 2 ) , pp.305 - 321

Formation of residual stress as a result of welding process is a familiar fact, but its relation with material composition is unknown. This study aims to investigate the effect of carbon content on welding residual stress in carbon steels. For this purpose, samples of ultra-low carbon interstitial free, low carbon and medium carbon steels are selected. Welding is performed as a beam on plate in spite of a joining process. Weld grooves are prepared at center of the rectangular samples. Automated submerged arc technique is preferred for welding process in order to ensure same welding parameters at each sample. Ultrasonic sound waves a . . .re used to determine residual stress. This non-destructive technique provides bulk residual stress which is average of shear and normal stresses through thickness of a material. A new approach is practiced to verify experimentally determined bulk residual stress with finite element simulation results. The model geometry of numerical analysis is divided into equivalent parts and average of shear and normal stresses is calculated. Non-destructive ultrasonic technique seems to be in good agreement with finite element analysis. © 2015, Springer Science+Business Media New York Daha fazlası Daha az

Levent, V.E. | Guzel, A.E. | Tosun, M. | Buyukmihci, M. | Aydin, F. | Gören, S. | Ugurdag, H.F.

Article | 2019 | Journal of Signal Processing Systems91 ( 1 ) , pp.93 - 113

This paper describes flexible tools and techniques that can be used to efficiently design/generate quite a variety of hardware IP blocks for highly parameterized real-time video processing algorithms. The tools and techniques discussed in the paper include host software, FPGA interface IP (PCIe, USB 3.0, DRAM), high-level synthesis, RTL generation tools, synthesis automation as well as architectural concepts (e.g., nested pipelining), an architectural estimation tool, and verification methodology. The paper also discusses a specific use case to deploy the mentioned tools and techniques for hardware design of an optical flow algorith . . .m. The paper shows that in a fairly short amount of time, we were able to implement 11 versions of the optical flow algorithm running on 3 different FPGAs (from 2 different vendors), while we generated and synthesized several thousand designs for architectural trade-off. © 2018, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature Daha fazlası Daha az

Psychological Help-Seeking Attitudes and Barriers to Help-Seeking in Young People in Turkey

Koydemir, S. | Erel, O. | Yumurtacı, D. | Şahin, G.N.

Article | 2010 | International Journal for the Advancement of Counselling32 ( 4 ) , pp.274 - 289

This qualitative research sought to understand the needs of Turkish university students related to adjustment to university, the sources they seek help from, their attitudes about and barriers to psychological help-seeking. Data analysis of interview transcriptions from 15 undergraduates identified several themes. Interpersonal problems, difficulties with staff and authority and future concerns were the most frequent issues. Students preferred informal sources of help in dealing with problems and in the main did not seek psychological help when confronted with problems. Perceiving one's problems as manageable and having an unwilling . . .ness to disclose oneself to others were among the barriers to help-seeking. Students were also unwilling to seek help from a professional unless the problem seemed crucial. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC Daha fazlası Daha az

Does Primary Hyperparathyroidism Have an Association with Thyroid Papillary Cancer? A Retrospective Cohort Study

Çetin, K. | Sıkar, H.E. | Temizkan, Ş. | Ofluoğlu, C.B. | Özderya, A. | Aydın, K. | Küçük, H.F.

Article | 2019 | World Journal of Surgery43 ( 5 ) , pp.1243 - 1248

Background: To investigate the relationship between primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) and papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). Methods: The perioperative findings of 275 patients with pHPT who underwent surgery between January 2014 and December 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. Thirty-one patients were diagnosed with pHPT and PTC concurrently. Pathology results and demographic findings of these patients were compared with 186 patients who underwent thyroidectomy and diagnosed with PTC at the same time interval. Results: The co-occurrence of pHPT and PTC was 11.3% (31/275). The median ages of the pHPT, pHPT + PTC, and PTC groups were 5 . . .5, 57, and 50 years old, respectively (p < 0.001). The diameter of tumor was smaller in the pHPT + PTC group [median 7 mm (range 0.5–25 mm) vs. 15 mm (range 1–100 mm)], with higher rates of microcarcinomas (p < 0.001), than the patients in the PTC group. Examination of tumor morphology showed higher rates of tumor capsule invasion and multicentricity in the pHPT + PTC group than those in the isolated PTC group (p = 0.02, p = 0.04, respectively). Conclusion: The pHPT + PTC group had significantly smaller tumor diameter than the PTC group. This result may support the idea that pHPT leads to overdiagnosis of PTC. However, observation of high rates of tumor capsule invasion and multicentricity in the pHPT + PTC group may suggest an associative etiology with more aggressive PTC. © 2019, Société Internationale de Chirurgie Daha fazlası Daha az

Memory Partitioning in the Limit

Kültürsay, E. | Ebcioğlu, K. | Küçük, G. | Kandemir, M.T.

Article | 2016 | International Journal of Parallel Programming44 ( 2 ) , pp.337 - 380

The key difficulties in designing memory hierarchies for future computing systems with extreme scale parallelism include (1) overcoming the design complexity of system-wide memory coherence, (2) achieving low power, and (3) achieving fast access times within such a memory hierarchy. Towards addressing these difficulties, in this paper we propose an automatic memory partitioning method to generate a customized, application-specific, energy-efficient, low latency memory hierarchy, tailored to particular application programs. Given a software program to accelerate, our method automatically partitions the memory of the original program, . . . creates a new customized application-specific multi-level memory hierarchy for the program, and modifies the original program to use the new memory hierarchy. This new memory hierarchy and modified program are then used as the basis to create a customized, application-specific, highly parallel hardware accelerator, which is functionally equivalent to the original, unmodified program. Using dependence analysis and fine grain valid/dirty bits, the memories in the generated hierarchy can operate in parallel without the need for maintaining coherence and can be independently initialized/flushed from/to their parent memories in the hierarchy, enabling a scalable memory design. The generated memories are fully compatible with the memory addressing in the original software program; this compatibility feature enables the translation of general software applications to application-specific accelerators. We also provide a compiler analysis method to perform accurate dependence analysis for memory partitioning based on symbolic execution, and a profiler-based futuristic limit study to identify the maximum gains that can be achieved by memory partitioning. © 2015, Springer Science+Business Media New York Daha fazlası Daha az

Influence of Plasmonic Nanoparticles on the Performance of Colorimetric Cell Viability Assays

Altunbek, M. | Çulha, Mustafa

Article | 2017 | Plasmonics12 ( 6 ) , pp.1749 - 1760

The conventional colorimetric assays based on measurement of the metabolic activity are routinely used to evaluate the cytotoxicity of nanomaterials (NMs). However, due to the varying absorbance properties of plasmonic NMs in the visible region of the spectrum, obtained results can be misleading. In this study, MTT, MTS, and WST-1 colorimetric cell viability assays were evaluated in the presence of gold (AuNPs) or silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Since a living cell a complex system containing many molecular and ionic species, the plasmonic AuNP and AgNPs may selectively interact with intracellular components possessing thiol, amino, a . . .nd carboxyl group moieties change the aggregation behavior of the NMs and thus their absorbance. A series of UV/Vis and DLS experiments were conducted to understand the interference possibility of the tested plasmonic NMs. The results show that the AuNPs and AgNPs do not have absorption at the wavelength where MTT formazan is measured while the both NPs may interfere with absorbance of MTS and WST-1 formazan. The overall assessments show that MTT assay is more suitable for the cell viability evaluation of spherical AuNPs and AgNPs with an average diameter of 50 nm. This study also suggests that a preliminary ex situ evaluation of plasmonic nanoparticles can provide valuable information for the suitability of the assay. © 2016, Springer Science+Business Media New York Daha fazlası Daha az

A new decomposition approach for the home health care problem

Lahrichi, N. | Lanzarone, E. | Yalçındağ, S.

Conference Object | 2017 | Springer Proceedings in Mathematics and Statistics210 , pp.27 - 36

Home Health Care (HHC) is a relatively new service that plays an important role to reduce hospitalization costs and improve the life quality for patients. Human resource planning is one of the most important processes in HHC systems, for which service providers have to deal with several operational problems, e.g., the assignment of operators to patients together with their routing process. In the literature, either these problems have been simultaneously solved, or decomposed by first solving the assignment problem and then the routing problem. In this work, we propose an alternative approach, where the decomposition is based on the . . . First Route and Second Assign (FRSA) approach. An instance generation mechanism is developed as well, which generates instances inspired from real HHC providers, to test the proposed FRSA approach under different circumstances. Preliminary experiments show the effectiveness of the approach. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017 Daha fazlası Daha az
