The aim of this study was to compare the impact of case-based learning (CBL) and lecture-based learning (LBL) on fourth-year dental students' clinical decision making by using the Structure of Observed Learning Outcome (SOLO) taxonomy. Participants in the study were fourth-year dental students (n=55) in academic year 2012-13 taught in a large-group LBL context and fourth-year dental students (n=54) in academic year 2013-14 taught with the CBL methodology; both took place in the oral diseases course at Yeditepe University Faculty of Dentistry, Istanbul, Turkey. All eligible students participated, for a 100 percent response rate. A re . . .al case was presented to the students in both groups to assess their clinical decision making on the topic of oral diseases. Their performance was evaluated with the SOLO taxonomy. Student t-test was used for statistical evaluation, and significance was set at the Daha fazlası Daha az

Purpose: To synthesize a new series of 5-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-3-[(4- substitutedpiperazin-1-yl)methyl]-1,3,4-oxadiaxole-2-thiones for their anti-inflammatory activity. Methods: The title compounds synthesized by Mannich reaction of prepared 5-(3,4-dichloroÂphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thione and appropriate substituted piperazine derivatives. The structures of the compounds were confirmed by IR, NMR and elemental analyses. The newly synthesized compounds were evaluated for their anti-inflammatory and ulcerogenic activities. Results: Most of the compounds were found to have significant anti-inflammatory profile in carrageenan footpad e . . .dema test. The compounds showed anti-inflammatory activity ranging from 30.6% to 57.8% inhibition. Conclusion: The compounds 5b, 5f, 5i, 5p and 5r showed most prominent anti-inflammatory activity with low gastric ulceration incidence than the reference drug indomethacine. These compounds could serve as lead molecules for further modifications. © Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart, New York Daha fazlası Daha az

In this work, we develop a continuous-time GARCH(1, 1) (COGARCH(1, 1)) model driven by a NIG-Levy process in order to analyze the volatility characteristics of Turkish interest rates. To our knowledge, this is the first work considering NIG-COGARCH modeling of interest rate data that utilizes the indirect inference method for parameter estimation. The discrete-time GARCH(1, 1) model has been used as a skeleton for building the NIG-COGARCH(1, 1) model. Daily interest rates on the Turkish two-year maturity treasury bond for the period between 02/01/2006 and 31/12/2010 have been used for the analysis. The empirical results show that th . . .e NIG-COGARCH(1, 1) model successfully captures the volatility clustering and heavy-tailed behavior of the interest rate returns and yields better in-sample estimations for conditional volatility in terms of forecast error statistics than the discrete-time model. Istanbul, the capital city of several major empires, has had many urban problems related to the continuous immigrations throughout the history. Various solutions have been sought in different periods in response to the critical water problem which has always been a need for the citizens. During the Ottoman Period, to compensate for the water need of the continuously fast-growing population, water was conveyed through water fines, either by repairing the old water supply systems and structures, or by finding new water sources and constructing new water lines. Hamidiye Waterway, built mainly during the Sultan Abdulhamid II Period, is . . .a good example of this. The Hamidiye Water Tower, the subject matter of this study, has not been stressed enough or has had just its name mentioned in the literature in spite of its importance from the view point of both its architectural properties and also its functionality. This structure, now situated in Levent Sanayi Mahallesi, crammed among the closely packed and distorted residences, yet preserving its existence, is a remarkable example which possesses all the significant characteristics of the style of the period with its architecture, and clues of the water engineering of the period with its functionality. In this study, the Hamidiye Water Tower has been discussed with its above mentioned properties, hence; on one hand, its function and its operating system in the defined water line have been presented in detail, on the other hand, its architectural characteristics have been emphasized and its architectural style has been interpreted in relation with the other structures of the period Daha fazlası Daha az

Purpose: To investigate beneficial effect of the readily available colchicine through its intravesical application on protamine/lipopolysaccharide induced interstitial cystitis model in rat and to compare its efficacy to the chondroitin sulphate available for clinical use. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four Wistar female rats were assigned to control (C), interstitial cystitis (IC), chondroitin sulphate (CS) and colchicine (Col) groups. IC, CS and Col groups received protamine sulphate and lipopolysaccharide (PS/LPS) instillation. Testing agents CS and Col were administered a day after PS/LPS inoculation into the bladders. Rats in G . . .roup C received saline solution. CS and Col groups received 1 mL CS (0.2%) and 1 mL Col (0.05 mg/mL). The treatment agents were left in bladders for one hour's duration. Animals were sacrificed 5 days after the inoculation and the bladder tissues were examined histologically to evaluate the amount of extravasated leucocytes, mast cell concentration (by counting total number of cells per 10 high power field (hpf; 1 hpf = x400 magnification) as well as interstitial tissue edema for each bladder. Results: Intravesical application of CS reduced significantly the leucocyte and mast cell infiltration as well as interstitial edema compared to group C. The level of reduction in leucocyte and mast cell infiltration in Col group was comparable to that of CS, although the interstitial edema was not resolved. Conclusion: Intravesical administration of Col decreased leucocyte and mast cell infiltration to the same extent of CS in PS/LPS induced bladder inflammation in rat. Col may be an alternative to other treatment modalities for painful bladder conditions such as IC Daha fazlası Daha az

Abnormal elongation of the mandibular coronoid process is rare and its etiology is not yet elucidated. The aim of this report is to demonstrate and discuss the relationship between elongated mandibular coronoid process and limitation of mouth opening with cone beam computed tomography. Although the clinical characteristic of elongation of the coronoid process is mandibular limitation, in this report, one case had problem with mouth opening. Axial scans revealed that the distance between the coronoid process and the inner face of the frontal part of the zygomatic bone may cause limitation in mouth opening. In conclusion, instead of t . . .he length, the distance between the coronoid process and the inner face of the frontal part of the zygomatic bone may be the actual reason for limitation of mouth opening. This may prevent misdiagnosis Daha fazlası Daha az
