Turkey and brain migration: Policies formed from push and pull perspectives and effects on brain drain

Preprint | 2023 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

Brain drain, which is defined as the departure of well-educated human capital to another geography, was noticed by England, which lost its qualified power to other countries in 1945 and increased rapidly after the 1960s with the effect of globalization. Countries such as the USA, UK and Germany have developed important brain drain policies from a push and pull perspective. Turkey has also developed important policies such as university reforms. In the following periods, within the scope of Five-Year Development Planning, although TÜBİTAK 2232 developed policies to pull reverse brain drain and Turquoise Card to pull foreign brain mig . . .ration, Turkey was late in putting the brain drain on its political agenda. In this thesis, “Turkey and Brain Migration: Policies Formed from a Push and Pull Perspectives and Effects on Brain Drain” is examined and chronologically from its own historical depths, starting from the early republican period, mainly within the scope of the Five-Year Development Planning. Turquoise Card and TÜBİTAK 2232 reverse brain drain policies are also included. The effect of Turkey's brain migration policies, including the push and pull effect, is analyzed. In addition, the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and dangers of these effects were evaluated with SWOT analysis. Additionally, the Brain Drain Policy has been conceptualized. This study was compiled from his thesis titled “Turkey and Brain Migration: Policies Formed from Push and Pull Perspectives and Its Effects on Brain Drain Daha fazlası Daha az

The Turkish right and the Republican People's Party - the case of 1977 general elections

Preprint | 2023 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

The definition of ideological cleavage in Turkish political life through the concepts of right and left began with the orientation of the Republican People's Party to the Left of Center in the 1960s. This separation evolved into a deep polarization and social crisis that would turn into a low-intensity civil war during the 1970s. The 1977 General Elections were held in this crisis atmosphere. In this framework, the political characteristics of the period within the scope of our study have been tried to be scrutinized through the right-left divergence. This thesis aims to analyze the points of convergence and divergence in the discou . . .rses of right-wing politics in Türkiye towards the RPP in the context of the 1977 elections. In that regard, the Justice Party, the National Salvation Party, and the Nationalist Movement Party were chosen as the subjects of our study, representing different ideologies of Turkish Right. The study's scope will be limited to the parties' official discourses: election campaign documents, radio speeches of party elites, and statements of party leaders, which will be evaluated Daha fazlası Daha az

The drama triangle in Tess of the D’urbervilles by Thomas Hardy and the Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison

Preprint | 2023 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

The drama triangle, a modern concept of psychology that involves three roles, the victim, the rescuer and the persecutor, occurs in many dysfunctional relations. This study aims to analyze how the drama triangle reveals itself in the selected novels and its main reason, which is a system of power dynamics that labels one as “the superior” and the other one as “the inferior.” The power dynamics and the drama triangle in Tess of the d’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy and The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison will be explained and evaluated through Feminist, Marxist and postcolonial theories. In fact, these theories are the most efficient in expl . . .aining why specific characters have certain roles in these novels. To clarify how the characters of the novels experience the drama triangle in their relationships with their dysfunctional families and others, prominent psychologists’ definitions and explanations will be used. The clarifications of other concepts, which are ‘the Switch,’ learned helplessness, addictions and dependency, will also enlighten how the drama triangle works in the novels. With these analyses, the thesis aims to indicate that the drama triangle is not a cultural concept proposed by various scholars and psychologists but a common concept of psychology, which is clearly apparent in all of these novels although they were written in different centuries. All these analyses emphasize that the drama triangle should be applied to more literary works and should not be overlooked in the field of comparative literature, as it is widespread in both literature and true life Daha fazlası Daha az

Dialogic discourse in John Fowles’s fiction

Preprint | 2023 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

Mikhail Bakhtin is one of the prominent literary theorists of speech genres and stylistics. He was mainly focused on the philosophy of language and the multi-voiced, multi-languaged systems as a result of the oppressive regime he was under. His literary concepts reflect the autonomy of the characters, dialogue, and multi-voiced language systems. He advocated for unfinalizability, the idea of freedom of the characters, and the diversity of the languages within a novel. According to Bakhtin, language was not only a tool for communication and should be examined with its social context. His concerns for literature and groundbreaking con . . .cepts of dialogism, polyphony, and heteroglossia are the main methodologies for this study that aims to figure out the power dynamics between utterances of opposite genders and how female dialogics can be observed in John Fowles’s A Maggot and The French Lieutenant's Woman. As a postmodern novelist, John Fowles’s novels reflect the heterogeneous style which is compatible with Bakhtinian concepts. Therefore, this study will discover the dialogic relationships and how different languages and several viewpoints reflect the centrifugal forces of the literature Daha fazlası Daha az

Erratic crude oil prices fluctuations effects on the economic development of Turkey: the case of coronavirus pandemic (covid-19)

Preprint | 2023 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

As an oil-importing nation, Turkey's economy is examined in the thesis by looking at its macroeconomic aggregate’s response to oil price fluctuations. Furthermore, the thesis will discuss the post pandemic coronavirus effects on energy and stock markets. Moreover, the thesis will analyze many aspects including crude oil types, production, and its relationship with other markets. On the one hand, macroeconomic aggregates will be represented by the total industrial production index, CPI, nominal exchange rate, total petroleum and other liquids production, and natural gas import prices. Error correction Model utilized for model 1: Anal . . .yzing the impact of shocks to the price of Brent oil on Turkey's macroeconomic aggregates. Model 2: examines the effects of coronavirus cases of infection on crude oil prices, stock price volatility (VIX), and the Borsa Istanbul Index (BIST-100) using an autoregressive distributed lag model. The research has econometrical and analytical areas which will use information of Brent oil prices in two models. Firstly, the correlation between Brent crude oil price and Turkish economic aggregates that will analyze monthly observations from Nov/2000 to July/2021. Secondly, estimating COVID-19 daily infected cases influence on oil and stock markets covering the period from the first infected case in Turkey 11/March/2020 until 12/April/2021. This study will add to the existing literature by bringing awareness to the significance of oil prices shocks on the Turkish economy, taking into consideration COVID19 pandemic alterations Daha fazlası Daha az

Adrenergic modulation of melanocortin pathway by hunger signals

Article | 2023 | Nature CommunicationsVolume 14 ( Issue 1 )

Norepinephrine (NE) is a well-known appetite regulator, and the nor/adrenergic system is targeted by several anti-obesity drugs. To better understand the circuitry underlying adrenergic appetite control, here we investigated the paraventricular hypothalamic nucleus (PVN), a key brain region that integrates energy signals and receives dense nor/adrenergic input, using a mouse model. We found that PVN NE level increases with signals of energy deficit and decreases with food access. This pattern is recapitulated by the innervating catecholaminergic axon terminals originating from NTSTH-neurons. Optogenetic activation of rostral-NTSTH → . . . PVN projection elicited strong motivation to eat comparable to overnight fasting whereas its inhibition attenuated both fasting-induced & hypoglycemic feeding. We found that NTSTH-axons functionally targeted PVNMC4R-neurons by predominantly inhibiting them, in part, through α1-AR mediated potentiation of GABA release from ARCAgRP presynaptic terminals. Furthermore, glucoprivation suppressed PVNMC4R activity, which was required for hypoglycemic feeding response. These results define an ascending nor/adrenergic circuit, NTSTH → PVNMC4R, that conveys peripheral hunger signals to melanocortin pathway. © 2023, Springer Nature Limited Daha fazlası Daha az

Absurdism in communication based on Albert Camus

Kaya, Can Tansel

Preprint | 2023 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

Albert Camus, one of the pioneers of existentialism and absurdism, identified the search for meaning in a meaningless universe as "absurd" by defining the limits of absurdism in his work The Myth of Sisyphus. According to him, a person knows that he will die while trying to add value to his life. This contradiction brings out the "absurd". Because death is a tragic end for Man. Another absurd work of Albert Camus, The Stranger is dominated by an incongruous sensibility. This novel of Camus, who argues that the world is absurd and meaningless, is considered one of the most important works of philosophy of the 20th century. The me . . .aninglessness of life, alienation from the environment and oneself, and indifference are at the forefront in the novel. Albert Camus, who has very influential works all over the world, knew today's people very well and expressed the problems of alienation and lack of communication in societies in a foresight way in 1942. In The Stranger, studies on absurd philosophy were carried out at the level of master's degree and doctorate, by considering other works of Camus. Some of these studies have dealt with Camus' philosophy of "absurd" by comparing existentialism, while others have touched on the concept of absurd in the context of the works. In my thesis titled “Absurdism in Communication Based on Albert Camus”, I focused on the alienation caused by absurdism by taking Albert Camus's novel The Stranger, which tells the story of absurdism, and examined the absurd communication and alienation of today's people by using In-depth Interview method, based on reasons such as socioeconomic, cultural and digitalization Daha fazlası Daha az

The adaptation study of the brief form of the affective Neuroscience personality scales (BANPS) to Turkish

Soncu Büyükişcan, Ezgi

Preprint | 2023 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

The aim of this study is to adapt Brief Form of Affective Neuroscience Scales (BANPS) into Turkish culture and examine its reliability and validity. BANPS was originally developed by Barrett and colleagues (2013) to shorten and improve the psychometric properties of ANPS (Davis et al., 2003). The BANPS consisted of 33 items and six scales which aim to assess personality traits on the basis of six affective systems (SEEK, PLAY, CARE, FEAR, ANGER, SADNESS). The reliability and validity analyses of Turkish BANPS were conducted with three groups of participants, including all participants (N= 873), young adults (N= 296), and adults (N= . . .577). The original methodology utilized in the construction of BANPS and Turkish ANPS (ÖzkararGradwohl et al., 2014) was followed both in reliability and validity analyses. The results implicated that the gender and age of the participants are important variables in BANPS scores. The Cronbach alpha values both for total and individual scales of BANPS indicated that the Turkish BANPS has good internal reliability. The results of overall reliability and validity analyses demonstrated that Turkish BANPS is a reliable and valid tool to utilize in assessing individual differences in primary affective systems in the Turkish non-clinical young adult and adult populations. The limitations and suggestions for future studies are also discussed as well as the findings of the study Daha fazlası Daha az

Online psychotherapy setting and its reflections on Therapeutic relationship during Covid-19 pandemic

Soncu Büyükişcan, Ezgi

Preprint | 2023 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

The purpose of this study was to explore how psychotherapy setting is affected by the mandatory conversion from face-to-face psychotherapy setting to online platforms due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, mainly with respect to the relationship between subjective perceptions and/or experiences regarding COVID-19 and therapeutic alliance for both psychotherapists and patients. A sample of 94 Turkish participants which consisted of 62 psychotherapy patients and 32 mental health professionals filled out the questionnaire whilst semi-structured interviews were done with nine psychotherapists and seven psychotherapy patients. The data c . . .ollection process lasted from February 2022 to May 2022. As survey questions present quantitative correlations, semi-structured interviews were done to provide a deeper understanding of the outcomes of this shift. Findings show that while COVID-19 history of patients was not related to their alliance scores, psychotherapists who have first-degree relatives tested for COVID-19 positive show significantly lower Working Alliance Invertory (WAI) scores. Both patients and psychotherapists addressed the advantages and disadvantages of OPT in accordance with their COVID-19 perceptions. While the loss of a shared room and embodied psychotherapy setting is a main consideration of both parts, the length of the ongoing psychotherapy process significantly correlated with WAI scores for patients. Patients who considered there are no advantages of OPT showed significantly lower WAI-Bond scores whereas for psychotherapists, the number of disadvantages of OPT was significantly correlated with lower WAI-Bond scores. Limitations and implications for further research were discussed Daha fazlası Daha az
