Justifying privileged partnership with Turkey: an analysis of debates in the European Parliament

Türkeş-Kılıç, S.

Article | 2020 | Turkish Studies21 ( 1 ) , pp.29 - 55

This paper seeks to uncover what drives European Parliament (EP) discussions on a privileged partnership for Turkey. In line with Habermas’s Communicative Action Theory, it scrutinizes the justifications used by the Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) in the Plenary Sessions between 2005–2012, i.e. from the start of accession negotiations until the privileged partnership’s falling into disuse in EP discussions. The research reveals that the alleged benefits of privileged partnership in contrast to the costs of Turkey’s full membership constitute the backbone of the right-wing groups’ arguments whereas the objection to a privil . . .eged partnership is justified by MEPs from left-wing groups for being against the EU’s official commitments to Turkey. In disputing Turkey’s full membership, the members of the right-wing parties reconstruct a European identity in which Turkey is the constitutive other. © 2019, © 2019 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group Daha fazlası Daha az

The impact of economic policy uncertainty on stock returns of Turkish tourism companies

E. Demir | O. Ersan

Letter | 2018 | Current Issues in Tourism21 ( 8 ) , pp.847 - 855

Economic policy uncertainty (EPU) has various implications for financial markets. This study examines the effects of EPU on stock prices of listed tourism companies in Turkey for the time period of 2002–2013. We show that EPU in Europe and Turkey has significant negative effects on tourism index returns. The finding reflects that stock returns of the Turkish tourism companies apparently depend on domestic and international economic uncertainty. Among the included macroeconomic variables, consumer confidence index is the only factor which has an impact on stock returns. © 2016 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

What did the Turkish climate movement learn from a global policy failure? Frame shift after the Copenhagen Climate Summit

Baykan, B.G.

Article | 2019 | Turkish Studies20 ( 4 ) , pp.637 - 655

Numerous scales in climate change politics might create problems for activists, as it is not always easy to locate the appropriate level(s) according to which they develop collective action frames. Therefore, activists might address various scales while identifying the problem and building strategies accordingly. The Turkish climate movement has been active through protest cycles largely influenced by global climate negotiations. Following the failure of the Copenhagen Climate Summit (2009) in delivering a binding climate deal, the movement shifted its strategy. Using the protest event analysis method and the movement’s archives, th . . .is paper attempts to shed light on how the Turkish climate movement learned from this global policy failure and why it switched from the global diagnostic and prognostic framing to a national/local one. Following this, the extent the European and transnational actors contribute to this frame shift will be discussed. © 2019, © 2019 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group Daha fazlası Daha az

Creating a pious generation: youth and education policies of the AKP in Turkey

Lüküslü, D.

Article | 2016 | Journal of Southeast European and Black Sea16 ( 4 ) , pp.637 - 649

This article addresses the youth and education policies of the Turkey’s third Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi, AKP) government from 2011 to 2014. This government period was marked by the emergence of a new myth of youth in Turkey: the myth of a pious generation, aimed at replacing the previous myth of a modern and national youth, prevalent in Turkey’s political culture since the nineteenth century and reinforced by the Kemalist Republic. The article first situates the education and youth policies of the AKP in the history of youth in Turkey and discusses the continuities and ruptures between the Kemalist an . . .d AKP youth projects. Secondly, through a critical reading of the political discourses of AKP leader Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and of specific youth and education policies of the government, the paper conceptualizes this newly emerging myth in the context of neoliberal economic and conservative social policies of the AKP government and its aim to control the future through reshaping the young. © 2016 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group Daha fazlası Daha az

Turkey’s Carnivalesque Challenge to the EU’s Monologue: A Response to Nykänen

MacMillan, C.

Article | 2016 | Journal of Contemporary European Studies24 ( 1 ) , pp.117 - 131

The paper explores Turkey–EU relations from a Bakhtinian perspective. Nykänen (2011), also using a Bakhtinian perspective, has argued that the EU’s stance in the accession process, particularly that of Turkey, has been monologic, which stymies the process by not allowing Turkey to ‘answer back’. This paper argues, in contrast, that, albeit in the context of a lack of dialogue, Turkey has indeed attempted to answer back to the EU through informal means, using a form of discourse that resembles Bakhtin’s concept of the carnivalesque, characterised by a reversal of roles and hierarchies, parodies, laughter and the grotesque, which chal . . .lenges the status quo by creating a ‘world upside-down’. In recent Turkish discourse, then, particularly that of leading members of the governing AKP, the traditional hierarchy of the ‘superior’ EU and the ‘inferior’ candidate country is broken own and reversed. © 2015 Taylor & Francis Daha fazlası Daha az
