Görsel sanatlar ve edebiyat arasındaki ilişki Antik çağlardan bu yana tartışılan, üzerinde çalışmalar yapılan bir konudur. Görsel sanat yapıtlarının dilsel temsili olarak özetlenen Ekfrasis, sessiz nesnelere ses verme, gerçekte olmayan nesneleri, sahneleri göz önünde canlandırma, okuyucuya anı yaşıyormuş gibi hissettirme gibi birçok farklı anlamlar kullanılmıştır.
