The investment strategies of art funds

Preprint | 2023 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

This thesis study examines the conditions that laid the groundwork for art funds in particular, their formation and development processes, and subsequently analyses the properties of art funds as a type of investment fund, and their structure and diversity, ultimately closely examining their investment strategies in detail through examples. Although artworks have been known to be valuable for centuries, the classification and acceptance of artworks as an asset class is a newer phenomenon that occurred in the last century. The operating mechanisms unique to the art markets evolved within the limits of the potential provided by the de . . .veloping technology as financialization began to dominate all fields. This evolution brought the worlds of art and finance together in new practices. As changing economic conditions impacted different geographic regions simultaneously, creating fluctuations in markets, investors sought safe investments. Emerging at this moment, these new art market practices became an anchor for investors, presenting them attractive opportunities. Building upon the structures of hedge and private equity funds, art funds are portfolios put together to create profit through the acquisition of artworks. Largely and increasingly in developing economies, these funds provide opportunities for High-Net-Worth and Ultra-High-Net-Worth investors who want to invest in art as either as a major investment or a diversification factor in their portfolios. This study aims to examine the emergence and developmental stages of art funds under the influence of capitalism and globalization, as well as the art markets’ unique dynamics and their transformation into new forms in light of the financial markets’ simultaneous evolution with technology. Thus, this study will underline the details of the operating mechanisms of art funds and their investment strategies to contribute to future studies in the literature.

. .iş bir kitleyi çatısı altında toplayarak çeşitli sömürülme biçimlerine karşı gelmiş; böylelikle insanın hükmetme arzusunun kurbanı olan tüm canlılar ve ekosistemi meselesi haline getirmiştir. Ekofeminist edebiyat eleştirisi sayesinde günümüzde hala çözülememiş, yüz yıllardır süregelen tüm ötekileştirme ve tahakküm biçimleri edebi eserlerde yerini alarak birer eleştiri nesnesi olmuştur. Bu amaç doğrultusunda, bu makalede, kapsamlı bir ekofeminizm tanımı yaparak, ekofeminist edebiyat eleştirisi çerçevesinde ekolojik duyarlılıkla birçok eser kaleme almış Ursula K. Le Guin’in (1953-2018) Dünyaya Orman Denir (1972)ve çağdaş Türk edebiyatında modern dünya eleştirisi ile öne çıkan Hakan Bıçakçı’nın (1978-…) Doğa Tarihi (2014) eseri üzerinde bir inceleme yapılarak; bu eserlerde kadın ve doğanın tahribi, kadın bedeninin sömürüsü, insanın tabiattan dolayısıyla özünden koparılması gibi temalarla ekofeminist bulguların tespit edilmesi amaçlanmıştır Daha fazlası Daha az

The reproduction of the self-made man myth through Netflix : a comparative analysis on Netflix's original series

Preprint | 2023 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

Netflix is currently the subject of various academic discussions in addition to its widespread commercial success over the last two decades. This study seeks to make a contribution to the academic literature by examining whether Netflix, an American media and entertainment company, truly "thinks local and acts global" in accordance with its motto or instead promotes the myth of the self-made man, one of America's founding myths, and, thus, reproduces capitalist hegemony. By examining Netflix’s three original teen series created in three distinct nations, Sex Education, Elite, and Aşk 101, this study seeks to answer the following que . . .stions: (i) How do Netflix’s original teen series produced in different localities incorporate the notion of the self-made man? (ii) How does the myth of the self-made man reproduced through these shows relate to capitalist hegemony? The stories of the protagonists of these three teen series are meticulously analyzed under the framework of Joseph Campbell’s notion of the “hero’s journey” to see whether their journeys reflect that of the self-made man as the myth and, accordingly, carry the core values of this myth or not. The results of this analysis provide fascinating insights into the perpetuation and representation of the "self-made man" myth in digital television. The self-made man myth is reproduced, albeit with some differences, in each of the three teen series examined, which makes us believe that Netflix, as an important actor in the global media industry, plays a role in spreading the dominant myths of capitalist hegemony around the world Daha fazlası Daha az

Preprint | 2023 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

This study aims to explore the experience of becoming an ultramarathoner and the codes of ultramarathon culture in Turkey through the lenses of symbolic and interpretive anthropology and performance studies. It identifies the meaning, value, and significance of ultramarathons for runners, and presents an ethnographic description of ultramarathon racing. The anthropological fieldwork was conducted from April 2018 to March 2022, employing in-person and online interviews, and participant observations at İznik Ultra Marathon, Salomon Cappadocia Ultra-Trail and Uludağ Premium Ultra Trail organizations. In total 28 in-depth interviews wer . . .e conducted with 22 ultramarathoners (13 men and 9 women), ranging in age from 34 to 60 years old, from İstanbul, Ankara, İzmir, Adana and Eskişehir. The results have shown that running ultramarathons is far beyond a pass time activity for recreational runners. It is an integral element of their identity and a lifestyle choice for them. Ultrarunning is an additional social space in their lives outside of the home and work environments. It gives ultrarunners a breathing space away from crowded city life, providing them with uninterrupted space for thinking and contemplation in nature. It turns into a vehicle for pushing their limits and seeing what they are truly capable of. It allows them to thrive physically, mentally, and spiritually, ultimately reinforcing their adherence to the neoliberal structure. The present study also revealed insights into the dynamics of ultramarathon races and the cultural norms, values and characteristics of the ultramarathon community Daha fazlası Daha az

The philosophical position of Kant between neo-kantians and Heidegger kantian critique as protemetaphysica

Preprint | 2023 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

This study is based on a comparison of two interpretations which have been developed on Kant's philosophy. The first of these interpretations belongs to Heidegger and claims that Kant's philosophy is fundamentally an ontology, moreover a fundamental ontology based on the analysis of finite human whatness. He grounds this claim by arguing that Kantian criticism constitutes the subjectivity of the subject in a temporal context. Thus, the Kantian representation of the subjectivity of the subject emerges almost as an analytic of Dasein. The second interpretation belongs to the Marburg school of the Neo-Kantian tradition. According to th . . .is interpretation, Kant's philosophy is an epistemology of the mathematical natural sciences. In this context, the Kantian dichotomy of intuition and understanding must be modified in favor of understanding. Because Kant's philosophy contains the pure principles of natural sciences, and in this context, the function of understanding as a lawgiver of nature comes to the fore. Rather than the philosophical correctness of these two interpretations, our study focuses on the possibilities that allow these two opposite interpretations to emerge from Kant's philosophy. In this context, the thesis is that Kantian philosophy is neither an ontology nor an epistemology. Kantian critique is a primary metaphysics, a protemetaphysica, which itself enables a representation such as epistemology or ontology Daha fazlası Daha az

Exhibition strategies of video works at Istanbul Biennials

Preprint | 2023 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

The introduction of electronic image recording tools in the 1950s provided a unique structure that could affect the production processes of artists. At the beginning, video art was used by artists to criticize television and later on, artists developed new strategies using the possibilities of video from different disciplines and perspectives. Since 1960, artists have started to use video as a means of expression and video has spread rapidly. In Turkey, the spread of video art coincided with the 1990s, and the interest of artists in video art increased in the 2000s. The elements to be considered in the exhibition of video art differ . . .ed from the exhibition of traditional artworks due to nature of the video. In this respect, in addition to formal concerns, hardware and technical possibilities were decisive, especially until the introduction of the first digital cameras in the mid-1990s. The use of display devices in displaying video art depends on the conceptual and formal relationship with the tool used in the demonstration. The unique space and image relations of the video have transformed the normative viewing conditions in the modernist white cube gallery space. Consequently, art institutions have started to create special spaces, which will be known as the black cube in the future. In this context, within the scope of the study, starting from the origins of video art and after the use of video as an artistic expression have been revealed in order to provide a basis for the interpretation of the approaches used in displaying video art in the editions held until the 17th Istanbul Biennial; the development of video art in the historical process in the world and in Turkey will be examined and the determining factors in the exhibition of video art are discussed. In the last part of the study, video works in the biennials will be detected and the approaches used in the exhibition were presented Daha fazlası Daha az
