The effects of stereotypes which are imposed through media on the creativity of children during the early puberty: the concept of goodness and badness

Preprint | 2023 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

The aim of this thesis is to understand how much children in early puberty get affected by the stereotypes that are presented through media. Also, it aims to elaborate how much these children manage to get out of these stereotypical patterns in situations that require them to use their own creativity. To understand how much they can cross the stereotypical borders as they think during a creative process, students are asked to illustrate goodness and badness in human forms in focus group sessions held in different types of schools located in Istanbul and Mardin. The illustrations are then statistically analyzed via semiological and c . . .ategorical analysis methods to understand at what level they choose to recreate angel and demon stereotypes. In conclusion, this study shows that students are aware of the iconological qualities of these stereotypes, and they mostly choose to recreate these stereotypes they see in media, in their own unique illustrations. It is also noted that the student’s perceptions of goodness and badness symbols are not influenced, neither with respect to cities they live in, nor the school types they attend, at any statistically significant level Daha fazlası Daha az

Discursive constructions and visual representations of Syrian refugees: a focus on the media in Turkey

Preprint | 2023 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

This study explores the discursive construction and media representations of Syrian refugees in relation to wider politics of nationalism and contested narratives of national identity in Turkey. For this purpose, frontpage coverage of 5 national dailies that were selected based on circulation size, target readership and ideological orientation were analyzed using Discourse-Historical Approach. News items and accompanying visuals sampled from Cumhuriyet, Yeni Akit, Hürriyet, Sözcü and Sabah were subjected to analysis through a set of paradigms that this study develops. These paradigms are Humanitarian, Religious, Economic, Socio-cult . . .ural and Demographic, Citizenship and Rights, respectively. Under each paradigm, associated subthemes of media framing with regard to the distinction between ‘us’ and ‘them’ are scrutinized. This research argues that media discourse on refugees cannot be separated from the broader social and political context and different narratives of who ‘we’ are. Media discourses of inclusion and exclusion that are intertwined; sometimes feeding each other and sometimes rejecting each other and are deeply interwoven with contemporary politics create meaning at social level regarding the representation of “Syrian refuge” Daha fazlası Daha az

Critical stance in popular/postmodern literary magazines: mainstream or alternative?

Özonur, Defne

Preprint | 2023 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

It is possible to say that a new era has begun in the field of literary journalism in the last ten years. Magazines in this new format, one of the products of popular culture produced for mass consumption; use left figures in their cover designs and left values in their content and define/introduce themselves as "left". In these magazines, the oppositional language of the youth subculture and the ironic, sarcastic, and humorous language that emerged after the Gezi resistance stand out. For this reason, the approach that the magazines are an alternative symbolic field of struggle is common, both in academic studies and in the cultu . . .ral field. In another approach, attention is drawn to the fact that magazines are products of the culture industry and commodify literature/art. In this study, it is claimed that the critical stance put forward by the magazines deemed appropriate to be called popular/postmodern literary magazines reproduces the dominant ideology. It has been tried to reveal the philosophical framework of the current critical stance in the magazines with examples of idealism, the cultural framework of postmodernism, and the theoretical framework of postMarxism. The existence of these frameworks implies the reproduction of the dominant ideology. In this study, it is aimed to draw attention to the relationship between philosophy, culture and social conditions based on these frameworks. It is a common phenomenon that what is presented "critically" in academic studies and in the cultural field intersects with what is "sovereign" and even serves it. In this way, it produces a "criticality" suitable for its own interests by breaking the "sovereign" and "critical" out of its context. In this study, which uses the Marxist approach and its method, dialectic, the popular/postmodern literary magazines Ot, Kafa and Bavul were examined based on the concept of criticism. Keywords: Criticism; Idealism; Left Melancholy; Popular/Postmodern Literary Magazines; Postmodernism; PostMarxism Daha fazlası Daha az
