International Gold Prices, Gold Reserves of Central Banks and Debt Stocks Relationship: Analysis Among G8 Countries

Canözkan, Ergün

Preprint | 2023 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

Gold is a commodity that has been used to protect the wealth of not only people but also organizations and states from past to present. For this reason, countries prefer to keep some of their reserves as gold through their central banks. At the financial macroeconomic level, the primary goal of countries is to sustain a healthy economic growth. However, when the economies of developed countries are examined, especially when the economic growth rate of the G8 countries, which are called the strongest countries class, is examined, it is seen that the public debt ratio is very high, which increases the risk levels of the countries. . . . Therefore, it is expected that the gold reserve demands of these countries will be in a causal relationship with international gold prices. In this study, the causality relationship between the public debt stock of countries, international gold prices and gold reserve of countries is investigated based on this question. The country sample is based on the quarter between 2008 and 2020 of the G8 country group. The analysis method has been utilized by econometric methods and the relationship between variables has been examined with panel granger causality analysis. As a result, a unidirectional causality relationship has been found between the debt stock of countries and international gold prices, and between gold reservoirs and debt stock Daha fazlası Daha az

Abdullahi, Mukhtar Farah

Preprint | 2023 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

The International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) have been implemented by firms around the globe to make financial information internationally consistent and comparable. The newly established international financial reporting standard (IFRS-16, "Leases") requires recognition of certain old off-balance-sheet assets and liabilities resulting from operating leases under the International Accounting Standard 17 (IAS 17). The objective of this research aims to employ financial statement items and ratios to investigate how the new leasing standard IFRS-16 affected financial statements following its first implementation in January 20 . . .19. The transportation and storage sector, which the IASB's impact analysis identifies as one of the industries that would be impacted the most has been looked into in this context. This study covers firms included in the transportation and storage sector that are traded in BIST (Borsa İstanbul) as of 2020 Daha fazlası Daha az

Orientalism and Nostalgia in British Travel Writing on The Balkans

Talay, Haluk İhsan

Preprint | 2023 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

The main purpose of this study is to examine the orientalist and nostalgic conditions as well as images reflected in British travel writers, specifically in Patrick Leigh Fermor’s travel trilogy consisting of A Time of Gifts (1977), Between the Woods and Water (1986) and A Broken Road: From the Iron Gates to Mount Athos (2013), and Georgina Harding’s In Another Europe: A Journey into Romania (1990). This work mainly utilizes theories regarding orientalism such as those of Edward Said, Andre Gingrich and Maria Todorova, in addition to Joep Leerssen’s theory of imagology and Svetlana Boym’s theories of nostalgia. Furthermore, this the . . .sis aspires to underline the orientalist conditions in the said works, by providing imagological examples that support these conditions and how they interact with nostalgic conditions felt or observed by authors. The orientalist conditions are handled in correlation with the conditions of the interwar period and the end of the cold war while the images reproduced by various peoples are underlined as contributing factors for both orientalist and nostalgic discourse Daha fazlası Daha az

Caucasus in Crisis (1870-1923)

Durdağı, Soykan

Preprint | 2023 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

Elviye-i Selâse (“Triple Cities”) is the region consisting of Batumi, Ardahan and Kars sanjaks during the Ottoman Period. The fact that the region was taken from the Ottoman Empire after the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878) was a major disadvantage for the Turkish people living in this region. After the Russo-Ottoman War of 1877-1878, this region remained in Russian domination for about 40 years and attempted to withstand every kind of persecution. This region was given to the Ottoman Empire pursuant to the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, which was signed as a result of the collapse of Tsarist Russia due to its internal struggle; however, the . . . joy was short-lived. After the Armistice of Mudros, which was signed after the World War I, the region was taken once more from the Empire. On the other hand, people of Elviye-i Selâse who foreseen the future painful days established national organizations in the hope not to relive the dark days. In order to manage these organizations from a single center, the Provisional National Government of the Southwestern Caucasus was established on January 17-18, 1919 Daha fazlası Daha az

Önder, Melih

Preprint | 2023 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

Cosmic Horror, developed by H. P. Lovecraft, is a subgenre of science fiction, fantasy and horror. Cosmic horror is about the fear of the unknowable. It is usually about threatening beings from outer space or ancient malevolent mysteries. It has also played a key role in the development of horror cinema. Unlike stereotypical horror themes, deep stories about the pains of human existence are included in the cosmic horror subgenre. This thesis presents a research on feature films that are directly or indirectly related to thecosmic horror genre. With this aim, some sample films were selected and some sequencesof these films were analy . . .zed using the semiotic method. Moreover, in order to make an evaluation on horror films in Turkish cinema, participants who have produced works in the horror genre were interviewed. They were asked to answer specific questions. A conclusion was finally reached based on the collected findings Daha fazlası Daha az

Framing Of The Annan Plan İn Print Media: A Comparative Analysis

Kurbanzade, Volga

Preprint | 2023 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

This dissertation presents a comparative analysis of headline articles, op-eds, and cartoons on the Annan Plan that appeared in Turkish Cypriot, Greek Cypriot, Turkish and Greek newspapers in the month preceding the twin referenda held on 24 April 2002. The dissertation provides a content analysis of 12 newspapers central to the issue: Afrika, Kıbrıs, Vatan, Charavgi, Fileleftheros, Cumhuriyet, Milliyet, Yeni Şafak, Rizospastis, Ta Nea and Kathimerini. The research primarily investigates the patterns of similarity and difference in the use of “win-win”, “win-lose”, “lose-lose”, “there is no alternative”, and “risky gambling” frames . . .in print media... By employing content analysis, the collected data from 12 newspapers across three main themes (articles, op-eds, and cartoons) are coded through a detailed codebook. The findings of the study indicate that the game theoretical frames were not only used to present the “yes” or “no” choices by pro-yes and pro-no newspapers, but newspapers with a critical stance refuted the game theoretical logic when questioning the legitimacy of the referendum itself. In this sense, the logic of game theory and prospect theory appears at the backbone of the referendum and how it was framed by print media. Findings also point out that this logic originates from policymakers and then finds its place in the print media. Finally, this dissertation sheds light on the complexity of a multiparty conflict where primary and secondary parties adhere to the Mediterranean Media Model. The research combines several disciplines such as political science, media studies, social psychology, and conflict analysis and resolution, drawing from the related literature. Last but not the least, the comparative content analysis offers an important tool for further research in this domain that could be applied in other cases. Daha fazlası Daha az

‘Tronie’ in Dutch Painting of the XVII Centur

Resuloğlu, Teymur Rzayev | Köklüce, Zeynep

Preprint | 2023 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

The purpose of this study is to conduct a comprehensive analysis by identifying the formal similarities and functional differences between “Tronie” painting and portrait painting that emerged in Dutch Golden Age painting of the XVII century. The aspects of Tronie painting that deviate from the standard understanding of portraiture are not easy to determine, as it has broad significance in its own genre. It has been misinterpreted by scholars due to the stylistic similarities it exhibits in research, and the form-content structure has been analyzed and clarified with recent studies. Our study has shown that Tronie painting, although . . .formally similar to portraiture and other genre paintings, is a distinct genre in which artists clearly show their technical mastery; it is grouped within itself and reflected in other genre paintings of the period. The findings obtained through the analyzes we have made have confirmed the hypothesis that Tronie painting is an independent genre, showing its adherence to the painting tradition. It occupies an important place in the process of development of the history of painting, as it enriches portrait painting through the experimental (empirical) basis it provides to painters Daha fazlası Daha az

New Inclinations in the Museumification Process of Private Museums in Turkey After 2010

Salar, İlkay

Preprint | 2022 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

This study comprises the development of art collectorship in Turkey through the concept of collections and in comparison with the Western world, the transformation of these art collections into private museums in the 2000s, and the new inclinations regarding the location choices of private museums after 2010. Ever since the prehistoric period, humans have researched, discovered, and collected, evolving over the centuries to do it consciously and consistently, becoming collectors, and later, with rational categorization and institutionalization, secularizing their collections, thus establishing museums. Becoming wealthier through com . . .merce, while collectorship developed in Europe starting with the Renaissance in the 15th century, leading to collections becoming public in the 17th century and the start of modern museumification in the century that followed, it was the bourgeoisie that birthed European collectorship. The foundations of art collectorship lay with the autonomy and the commodification of art, which created its own market. Thus, art collectorship and the art market always progress simultaneously. In the Republic of Turkey, liberal economic policies starting in the 1980s allowed private capital to take over from the state, launching a period where artworks and collectorship increased. Attempting to integrate itself with the world as a result of the globalization policies of the 1990s, the 2000s for the Turkish art market, dominated by private capital, coincide with a highly dynamic period when the recently growing population of art collectors founded private museums in İstanbul by which they could receive exposure and recognition This period saw the emergence of culture and arts events and activities in the periphery. After 2010 this was followed by collectors who wished to bring their collections to the lands where they were born and dreamt about showing revealing the existence of a culture outside the center, who then established museums towards that goal Daha fazlası Daha az

The Effectiveness of Developing a New Experimental Educational Syllabus for Teaching User Interface Mobile App Design to Students of Visual Communication Design in Amman, Jordan

Becer, Emre | Humaid, Shahd

Preprint | 2023 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

It is becoming more and more essential to use mobile applications. Therefore, user interface mobile applications become more popular. Despite its importance, UI courses for mobile applications design are not a part of all graphic design syllabi at Jordanian universities for visual communication design, resulting in graduates with scant knowledge of the subject. Thus, it is common for newly graduated students to self-educate through online courses or to be trained by companies, which are often non-academic and commercial. Thus, the purpose of this study is to develop a novel educational syllabus proposition for teaching UI mobile appl . . .ication design to students of visual communication design at Jordanian universities. To achieve this, the current study followed a methodological approach of design-based research. This methodology allowed for several iterations of the syllabus. The first draft was based on a content analysis of 13 prominent syllabi. Then the first draft was refined based on the perceptions of five experts. As a result, this study provided a comprehensive examination of the need for specialized courses on UI mobile app design as part of the bachelor’s degree. The proposed syllabus is divided into four parts: introduction, UI process, UI case studies and best practices, and a final project. The introduction covers the basics of UI. The UI process section covers theory and practice, tools, and publishing. The case studies and best practices section focuses on medical UI mobile app design and includes a UI checklist tool. The final project requires students to present and review their projects. The results of this study providing evidence of the value of involving experts and practitioners in the design process. This study also has implications for improving and developing future syllabi, which may help to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the field of UI design for mobile apps Daha fazlası Daha az

Large-scale forecasting of large fluctuations using wavelet coherence and multifractal behavior and developing wavelet coherence for multiple time series

Preprint | 2022 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

Shocks, jumps, booms, and busts are typical large fluctuation markers that appear in crisis. Identifying financial crises and estimating leading indicators with strong relations during crisis periods have an essential role in the literature. This thesis examines the dynamic co-movements of leading indicators' multifractal features to identify financial crises due to large fluctuations. The detected dynamic relationships predict leading indicators with scale-by-scale analysis and make large-scale predictions better than challenger models. As a natural result of these studies, the n-dimensional wavelet coherence method is examined, an . . .d the vectorwavelet package is transferred to the R program. This thesis consists of three independent parts, and the contents of the studies are summarized below. In the first part, stock returns' co-movements with other leading indicators in crisis periods are analyzed with multiple and quadruple wavelet coherence using interest rate, exchange rate, and trade balance differences. The scale-by-scale wavelet transformation was used to predict large-scale relationships, and stock return estimation was performed. In the second part, the multifractal characteristics of sectoral default probabilities of the real sector in Turkey and Turkey sovereign CDS rates were examined by detrended fluctuation analysis. Significant dynamic connections between the Hölder exponents of the default rates and CDS during financial crisis periods have been examined. During the periods of financial crises, among the Hölder exponents, severely correlated large scales show multifractal features. Scale-by-scale wavelet transform has been used to predict large-scale relationships, and hence vector fractionally autoregressive integrated moving average forecasting provides better results than scalar models. The final part of the thesis introduces a new wavelet methodology to handle multivariate time series dynamic co-movements by extending multiple quadruple wavelet coherence methodologies. The primary motivation of our works is to measure wavelet coherence analytically for the specific dimension Daha fazlası Daha az

Personalized Evaluation of Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide Exchange in COVID-19 Patients with Regard to Energy Homeostasis

Yılmaz, Bayram | Temur, Sibel | Ercan, Sina | Akduman, Seha | Gücü, Ecem | Erdoğan, Cihan Süleyman | Yenikale, Ayberk | Özilgen, Mustafa

Preprint | 2021 | Yeditepe University Academic and Open Access Information System

The COVID-19 does not proceed the same way in every patient. It may interfere with both oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange in the alveoli; therefore, prevent ATP generation; subsequently, restrict energy supply for the life processes of the patient. Data sets representing the course of the COVID-19 in four patients, where the disease followed dissimilar paths were reassessed after the end of the treatment, by focusing on the respiratory and metabolic energy related parameters (FiO2, PaO2, SaO2, PaCO2) and the other parameters such as HCO3, lactate, body temperature, C-reactive protein (CRP) and blood urea nitrogen levels. . . . The valuable treatment data pertinent to each individual showed that each of them needed a personal treatment method. Group based statistical analyses may cause loss of the valuable medical information, if some of the dissimilar treatment details is considered as outliers. NIH has very recently reported that, there is no sufficient data yet to recommend either for or against the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in the treatment of the COVID-19 patients. However, the results of this study suggest that ECMO may be useful for removal of the CO2 from some of the COVID-19 patients; therefore, will be helpful if used in their treatment Daha fazlası Daha az
