Orta Çağ’ın başında, V. ve VIII. yüzyıllar arasında Soğdluların doğuya doğru olan göçü, Orta Asya kara kütlesinde gerçekleşen kültürel etkileşimlerin tarihinde önemli bir unsurdur. Yedisu, Otrar ve diğer birçok yerleşim yerinde ve özellikle Tang’ın başkenti Chang, Luoyang ve Dunhuang kentlerinde Soğd nüfusu iki katına çıkmıştı.
